River Spirit’s new EP Constant Lullaby is a measured dance of melody, cathartic whimsy, and tectonic plate shifting rhythm, both a perpetually entrancing embrace and a deft re-imagining of the elements we’ve assumed comprised them: alternative Solange-esque RnB and well-crafted 4AD-styled electro-pop all crafted with a sense of fearlessness, like cherubic children at play. This a band that dances on the edge of chaos, creating new approaches to song construction that defies genre expectations, and yet on Constantly Lullaby fierce homage is paid to all of those influences before the dam breaks and a flood of new sounds emerge. While the songs like “Deeper Fantasy” push us, well, deeper-- into trance states, admiring colors that synesthetically spin on invisible kaleidoscopes invoked by warm key passages and dart-precise guitar play, other songs like the title track (of all tracks!) give us a nice distorted wake up call. River Spirit’s overarching concept of personal autonomy and a realization of self-worth through examining the relationships we craft with each other feels universal, but only in that the impact is expansive, weighty, and constantly changing. On Constant Lullaby these revelations aren’t just post-break up epiphanies to be forgotten after a morning chamomile, they’re liberatory.
